Richard (Fred) Grant was born and grew up at Mposa near Richards Bay, KZN, South Africa. From an early age he has had a passion for photography but this has always had to take second place to his career activities, first as a geologist, then as a farmer and more latterly as the founder of an independent school Grantleigh.

He married Renette Freese in 1982 and together they had four sons, John, David, Gareth and Warren. Richard and Renette lived for a while at the Simbithi Eco Estate at Ballito, just north of Durban, South Africa but they are now travelling throughout southern Africa.

Richard is a keen wildlife photographer with an emphasis on birds. He is happiest when in the bush together with Renette and his camera.

Photographic Equipment: Richard uses Nikon equipment. Most of his wildlife photos are taken using a Nikon D4S camera and 800mm lens. A D3S, D3 and D300S cameras, 200 – 400mm and 18 – 200mm zooms are used as backups.
